Breath, Mindfulness and Liberation

J. Goldstein, (2007).  in volume two of Abiding in Mindfulness – On Feelings… brings clear focus to the infinite importance of feelings – the sensation-based associations of various emotional and physical states. Via on-going and regular practice of mindfulness and contemplation we may access the four areas of human awareness: body, feelings, heart-mind, and dharma. The rising and falling away of all phenomena, especially human feelings, requires keen attention to internal emotional experiences. Being fully aware of how little control we may have over life experiences, or our own death, opens up the path to mindfulness of feelings as a form of liberation from typical samsaric Ups and Downs. As Sophia Newman reminds us , mindfulness awareness can flow between two poles: intense concentration and the more gentle absorption of whatever is happening right now. Now if the basis of pure experience. Be with the now of your deeper, slower breath.

Breathing as Spiritual Practice

W. Johnson (2019). Breathing as a Spiritual Practice…Rochester, Vt.: Inner Traditions, pp.142-145 presents key understandings of the role breath plays in spiritual practices a meditation. Breath meditation allows sometimes safer space for our deeper, darker personal experiences. Once you take more control of the breath, move it deeper and slower into your depths. When mind wonders off, gently bring it back to focus – the breath. Allow the breath to become a multi-faceted experience in complete awareness. After breath meditations it may be helpful to journal about your inner experiences. B. D. Lamson reminds us when facing adversity it is best to use the breath as your ally. C. Feldman adds it is better to receive the breath as it presents; only later taking more control of how you utilize your breath and respond to it. Even when receiving and allowing the breath to be what it is, simply be with your self-consciousness and uncertainty. No special focus on breath can produce soothing, but more and more practice of allowing then controlling may open up doors to empowerment. Empowerment may lead to more soothing life experience.

What does dharma wisdom have to offer here?

Breath may be associated with aspects of human trauma and recovery from it. Embodiment of emotional experiences is significant in suffering and recovery. Embodied emotional experience that was harmful can be the most visceral type of  memory based on traumatic pain. Use breath as a means to reach stabilized awareness and, hopefully, calmness may be within reach; however, without phased in experience of mind-body recall of trauma, use of the breath may be a slow-developing skills. Since breath is clearly linked to the central nervous system and its actions/reactions, breath is highly sensitive to past and present events. Whereas psychodynamic insight and cognitive-behaviors skills may be valuable in recovery, ignoring work with the breath may lead to failed efforts. Slowly integrating pleasant and unpleasant bodily experiences – mainly in memory, sensation and breath – has the potential to open up pathways to deep healing. Careful use of Eastern dharma realities in  Western psychotherapy may enhance comfort, empowerment, and outcomes of therapy. Note, however, that expertise in both Eastern and Western approaches is required.

Spirit Wars and “Spiritual Warfare”

This post will discuss the topic and personal strategies.  Most content will relate to both physical realities and metaphorical meanings and categories. Since a person viewing their self as fighting a spiritual war most likely holds onto certain parts of self in this endeavor, it is highly unlikely that the actual adversaries are authentic entities outside/inside the self. It is more likely that personal experience has conditioned the person to understand these variable processes as quite serious and sometimes dangerous. To maintain a clear boundary, this post is not presenting a way to treat people suffering from any form of identity disorder; rather, this post offer some ideas about how one might go about becoming healthier via less targeted clinical interventions. The remaining part of the post will offer comments and suggestions for personal consideration of the reader. Most content deals with realistic natural phenomena in life. I hope I am making myself clear here. I hope you find the content helpful.

  1. Since pure white/golden healing light has been noted in almost all major spiritual traditions, you might wish to experiment with the experiences noted below.  Do your best to see the light as a potential healing ally. Allow yourself to feel the light. Do not block!
  2. Experiment with observing  the rising and setting sun. Allow the light to penetrate you; use kinesthetic awareness to do so.  Do your best to feel the light and experience its healing power. Enjoy this! Do not look directly into the intense light energy of the sun.
  3. Study basic astrophysics to learn how gravity (one of the main constants in the universe) has direct effects on dark/black energies.
  4. On a clear night, look deeply into the starlit sky and allow the star energies to enter you. Feel it; use it. Enjoy this!
  5.  On a clear day, look into the blue sky with moving clouds. Allow the light to penetrate you and feel its power. Enjoy this!
  6. Go for a silent walk in nature. Notice! Use all your senses to encounter all that is there. Gently gaze at a mountain, pond, lake, or stream. Notice the transparency off the clear water as it moves downstream. Send your troubles (like a leaf) downstream with the current. Make the best of your attention and intention here. Notice! Relax! Enjoy this!
  7. You may wish to try the Ten Directions experiment. Discern carefully what directions are helpful. What directions bring you into your deep inner self ally? Stand silently and notice the healing air/wind coming from the North, South, East, and West. Notice the effects! Now stand there and bring your attention to everything inside of you. And next – to everything outside of you. Look up and look down; notice. Now use your natural ability to project and send your troubles far, far, far away. Notice! Now move your body slowly and notice; now move your body with more vigorous energy, and notice. You have completed your Ten Directions experiment. Hope it was helpful. Thank our indigenous First Nation Peoples and Buddhist concepts for this process.
  8. Relax and begin to breathe deeply, slowly. Notice the ease and the difficulty. Continue to breathe. Allow the deeper, slower breath to calm you. Notice how the freshness of the committed breath restores your airflow in your throat, heart, soul, etc. Allow the clean flow of healing breath to cleanse you- in your throat, heart, soul.
  9. Now do your best to engage your helpful beliefs and helpful behaviors to support your internal healing. Engage in activities/behaviors that you find helpful.  Do not engage in thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that are unhelpful. Be strong.
  10. Examine your personal space-time continuum, and pay close attention to when your time and space are safe for you. Spend much more time in this aspect of time and space. Do the same for being happier.
  11. Practice paying more attention to the silent, still space between your breaths, between your thoughts, between your heartbeats, and between your periods of suffering. Use the energy of your attention to enhance the space, silence, peace, and tranquility.
  12. Use your personal, natural wisdom to disempower any obstacles that hinder your progress to improved health and happiness.
  13. Use all of the above as metaphors of self-protection against all sources of suffering.
  14. Know that emotional dysregulation, anger, fear all feed your inner dragons. Best to starve them!
  15. Lastly, if you are a religious person, pray more.
  16. If you read spiritual books, you may want to try the Lectio Divina approach. In this Latin Christian Church method one reads a spiritual passage over and over and over again, each time going more deeply into the self and core religious beliefs. This form of meditation tends to enhance the power of the spiritual information being read as well as the power of the belief.

Liberation of the True Self

Socrates is reported to have noted that “the secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old but on building the new.” In Buddhism there are clear relationships between “no-self” and the force of impermanence, that reality that ensures constant change and thus personal dissatisfaction as a norm.  In the lived experiences of our psychological turmoil we humans do the utmost to direct our energy to obtaining what we want (attachment, desire, craving) and avoiding as much pain and suffering as possible. Our endless effort to obtain material and status goals for some form of inner security against the world repeatedly leads us to struggle, fear, and loss – suffering. Our cognition, emotion, behavior and sensory contact with all phenomena are fully engaged in evaluation of everything: did I get what I wanted and avoid suffering for now or not? This is the hedonic treadmill of lived attachment and avoidance. Cognitive-Behavioral analytics ends up in the same place over and over again: short-term pleasure (getting what I want for now)  and longer-term suffering  (fear of losing it or being involved in more emotional pain).  This state of constant seeking (how many “likes” do I have?) tricks us into thinking that this time, it will work. We seek safety, security, and various forms of wealth; we expect to achieve these goals and to avoid as much suffering as possible. This is impossible, since the seeking and attaching itself eventually causes more personal suffering. We humans have very short memories when it comes to the realities of pleasure and pain, happiness and suffering. Our emotional striving to be perfect and get ahead often leave us with just more desire.  The sad fact is that no matter how successful we are in accumulating all the goodies, we tend to continue our suffering sometimes in different forms.

A possible solution to consider for liberating yourself from the merry-go-round of life’s seeking and avoiding is to practice intensive, regular deep meditation and yoga. Through these regular/daily practices you will, indeed, confront yourself and perhaps open a pathway to spiritual freedom. You may liberate your true self in the process. Narrowly focus on your consciousness – the mirror of your true self.  It does not change even when the content of experience does change. Become your observing self in a state of pure awareness without judging or evaluating. In the evolutionary process, clinging is one of the most primal actions. The “vapor of thoughts” along with strong attachment clinging causes our norms to be related to our false self – with its entitlement, feeling special as a defense, greed, anger, even hatred.  Just STOP all of this process as much as you can; focus on who/what you are at the deepest most spiritual levels. Who am I is the eternal and most important question. As you meditate and do yoga, concentrate on radically accepting everything that has happened to you and may still be happening to you.  This does not mean stand by and allow yourself to be abused by cruel people; however, it does mean to pay very acute attention to what experiences trigger your ego-defenses and negative reactions in thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. How much control over your emotions are you willing to give up to other people?  Radically accept as a norm, do your asanas, meditate often, allow your true self to “let go” of the false self”s ego and superego demands. Pursue spiritual practices, be compassionate and generous, and live the life your true self desires for you. This is a life of more inner peace, even tranquility, more happiness, less competition, more love, and DOING good for others. This path is difficult in our materialistic world. The fruits of your efforts will be gratifying! If you practice, you will discover the truth about being a happier, more lovable person.

If you are not satisfied with the outcomes from your efforts here are three more things to practice. When you become entangled in the ego defenses of your mind, use the Buddha’s “best friends.” Calming breath, the half smile, standing, sitting, walking or laying down all may change your neurophysiology and thus your mood and level of self-control. This will allow you better capacity to apply radical acceptance and let go of harmful  emotional reactivity.  Another approach championed by the Buddha is to gently control your second arrows.  The first arrow is when something unpleasant happens to you and there is nothing you can do about it; this is pure suffering, and it is painful.  However what you decide to have your mind, body and emotions do with the first arrow of suffering is called the second arrow.  This very sharply pointed arrow can lead to long-term, even life-long suffering about something you failed to radically accept and let go. Become an expert in perceiving the initial activity of your second arrows, and STOP as soon as possible. At this point you may apply RAIN – recognize what if happening; accept it; investigate causation; and, apply no-self or if less skilled “its not about me attitudes.” These follow-up practices should be very helpful to you in your effort to become a more calm and more happy person.

Meditating in the Gap of Nothingness

The Buddha taught about your four best friends, that is how the body changes physiology when you sit, stand, walk/move and every time you are lying down. Modern Western neuroscience now supports this statement of 2500+ years ago. Thich Nhat Hanh added the importance of your breath, walking meditation, and half-smile; these realities also change your physiology.  Jon Kabbat-Zinn added the importance of simply being present this moment, and making everything your teacher. The initial subtle changes are in anatomy and nervous tissue, then the brain takes over and the mind-body follows. So you have some very natural “best friends” to assist you in dealing with everyday challenges and suffering.

I have used regularly all of the above in my own practice. I have been especially fascinated with the power of the breath. The multitude of breathing techniques, and the ability to control my own arousal and calming with attention to changes in breath. In my years of practice I have found the quiet gap between breaths and thoughts – between all rising and falling perceptions of conscious awareness – too be especially helpful.  There is phenomena and there is the gap. As you rest in the utter silence of this special time and place, you are nearer to death than at any other time in your awakened states. There is nothing there, no movement, no breath, no life. All that exists in that quick moment is emptiness and vast boundless nothingness. Below I have noted the steps for meditating in your gap. Hope you will do this often.

  1. Sit in a comfortable meditation posture or do this while lying down on your back.
  2. Begin with a few soothing deep, long, slow breaths.  Continue!
  3. Now bring full attention to your breathing – its feel, its motion, its sensation.
  4. Just concentrate a bit on the moving breath in and out, deep and slow.
  5. Now with gentle attention notice the subtle reality of the gap between your in and out as well as you out and in breaths. The gap is in the middle way between the arising and falling of breath.
  6. You may also notice that when meditating you have thoughts; it helps to pay attention to the gap between thoughts rather than the content of thoughts. Just focus on the gaps.
  7. You may also notice that there is a gap between the arising and falling away of emotional awareness.
  8. For some finding the gap just before your ego-mind begins to evaluate an experience can be a real discovery.
  9. For some it would be helpful if you allowed the gap just before you speak harshly. Are the gap not the words.
  10. Now practice! No matter what the content is before or after the gap, ignore it all and focus only on the gap itself.
  11. No matter what comes into consciousness, just let it all go and stay with focused attention on the gap and its internal self-experience.
  12. Perhaps your gap has a color, or some depth, or some other characteristics that makes it more interesting. Just feel your attention there without judgment or evaluation of any kind. Just BE the gap!
  13. For some the gap is far away; great space and distance separates you from being in it. You just see it.
  14. If your gap is far away in the distance, does it appear as a distant and very large valley? What do you see?
  15. If your gap is close to you in space and time, are you silently being in it or moving into it?
  16. Is there silence or sound? If there is sound, what kind of things do you hear?
  17. Do you feel safe in the gap, or does it produce other feelings?
  18. Go as deep into the gap – your personal gap – as you feel comfortable with. Notice!
  19. Can you find peace, quiet, solitude, perhaps even self-love there?  Try it again!
  20. Continue your practice until you decide to stop or meditation time is over.

Polyvagal Interventions for Anxiety

S. Porges and his Polyvagal Theory may provide innovative interventions for both anxiety and depression. Many people become trapped in ruminating about the past or worrying about the future; they cannot seem to keep their mind and body in the present moment.  Some strong, fear-based, bodily defenses may not respond well to “talk therapy” alone. In helping clients with such suffering it is important to include a very strong clinical alliance and relationship, as well as personal narrative on internal introjected messages about their vulnerabilities, fears, and self-doubts. Recall that anxiety is generally a body-based defense from lower brain areas (limbic and brain stem). These areas are often un-affected when just “talk” occurs in therapy. There are certain signs that a person’s anxiety is acting up in a clinical session. These are:

  1. Higher pitched voice, sometimes with speedy delivery;
  2. Prolonged silences;
  3. Tighter, flat face and tight jaw – often with the upper face lifting slightly;
  4. Random nervous body movements;
  5. Rapid, higher-chest breathing;
  6. Problems in awareness, memory, and cognitive comprehension; and,
  7. Sometimes full blown panic.

When such anxious defenses appear, the therapist needs to move to grounding and calm breathing interventions.  Talking it through, working it through may be insufficient to restore emotion regulation. Porges makes the following suggestions to activate polyvagal interference to anxiety. If successful, emotion regulation will be re-established.

  1. Request the client to exhale more slowly, and with more emphasis.
  2. Then have the person extend slightly their exhalation. Be careful not to extend too far; discomfort will follow.
  3. If the person is fearful of public speaking or presenting in a group therapy session, request that they add more words to their sentences. This will require a change in breathing process – thus extending the exhalation.
  4. Practice longer exhalations as the client breathes more slowly and more deeply.
  5. Have the client lay on their back with their slightly bent legs high up on a wall – breathe
