Research Supports Meditation for Health Improvement

Meditation for Health Improvement

It is estimated that between 10 and 15 million Americans participate in some form of regular mindfulness or contemplative practices; secular-based meditation and yoga may be the most common of these practices.  Many others practice tai chi, qi gong, forest-based contemplation, Taoism, etc.  The US National Institute of Health has been a regular generous funder of many mindfulness research projects. Most mindfully-informed people have heard of or practice Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction; many informed therapists have heard of or practice Steven Hayes’ Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Much of this supporting research MindfulHappiness_WhatisMindfulness-2015comes from controlled studies with random assignment, and some of the research is based on randomized controlled clinical trials. Various well-designed meta-analyses (2014, 2015) have found that there are moderately strong and positive effects from the practice of regular meditation and/or yoga.  Despite the popular press claims that meditation and yoga cure just about everything, these careful studies have noted that there are beneficial meditation effects for depression, anxiety, stress reactivity, chronic pain and substance misuse; in the last area, improvements are due mainly to improved awareness of bodily sensations leading to emotions (interoception), better emotion regulation, executive strengthening, and limbic quieting.  Below I will list various research-supported positive effects from regular meditation practices.

Improvements documented in research (with many controlled randomized clinical trials)include:

  1. Better attentional capacities (sustained, reoriented, shifted);
  2. Improved working memory;
  3. Better emotion regulation (cognitive and physiological practices that counter stress);
  4. Greater compassion (especially from loving kindness meditation);
  5. Improved personal happiness in various forms;
  6. Greater access to deep wisdom about the WAY things are, the nature of reality (less so in secular practices);
  7. Informed insight into causes of personal suffering;
  8. Improved breathing capacities (respiratory volume, respiratory efficiency, oxygen exchange) and skills;
  9. Better awareness in both focused and open mental orientations;
  10. Faster and better alerting perceptual skills;Mindful_Happiness-Gratitude
  11. Improved relaxation and equanimity – the famous “relaxation response;”
  12. Better response inhibition – better self-control in challenging emotional situations;
  13. Improved overall psychological and emotional well-being (life coping, contemplative quality, life purpose, life meaning, life satisfaction, etc.);
  14. Greater gratitude for what you do have right now;
  15. Reduced depression and anxiety;
  16. Improved chronic pain management;
  17. Better concentration skills;
  18. Reduced self-medication habits;
  19. Improved physical health – especially movement meditation and meditation/yoga coupled with exercise;
  20. Deeper social and earthly connections (non-duality);
  21. Strong transformational processes with improved integrations of body-mind-heart-spirt experience (via spiritual/religious path practices);
  22. Improved personal behaviors in life – more positive compassion-based behaviors, less negative greed-based behaviors); and,
  23. Positive impact on cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, musculoskeletal disorders.

With all these potential personal benefits from regular meditation (and yoga) practice, WHY would you NOT do such practices????? It is time!

Quasi Self-Hypnotic Pain Relief To be successful in this intervention you will have to let go of ego-based defensiveness and remain quite focused for quite some time. These are not easy things to do. DO NOT do this intervention if you are feeling highly vulnerable at this time, or if you are not working with […]

Trauma Informed Care – Avoidance Process Although more and more clinicians are learning about and using principles/practices of Trauma Informed Care, too few understand the behavioral dynamics of negative reinforcement in the avoidance of trauma-related cues (people, places, things, internal sensations, emotions and images). This post will give a very brief description of negative reinforcement […]

The Principles of Nature and Natural Healing This is an advanced post on Eastern views of healing. From ancient shamanic traditions all the way to today’s AMA approved procedures in energy medicine, healers have been trying to discover and integrate the foundations of nature into healing. This reality exists from shamanic rituals all the way […]

Concentration Vs Mindfulness? Many people new to meditation often confuse the differences between mindfulness or accepted bare attention to whatever arises in the moment and concentration or strong penetrating awareness on one thing without distraction.  Concentration is a more intensely focused and engaged form of mindful attention.  Concentration is sustained, powerfully focused, one-pointed attentional awareness. […]

Building Emotional Resilience On a personal note, right now I am suffering.  Its April 15th and I have a terrible viral infection (sore throat, chest congestion, and fever).  I feel weak and miserable.  Perhaps all that frigid air we endured in New England this Winter also kept infectious “stuff” under control for a while. However, […]

Money and Electronic “Friends” Are They Real ? The Sutta Nipata  (4.15, Translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu) noted “Seeing people floundering like fish in small puddles, competing with one another…fear came into me. Help For Therapists: Working with Diversity Clinical interventions, especially strongly evidence-based interventions, impact clients via new skills and practices in mind-body clinical realities. No matter how good (or “good enough” ) a clinical intervention is it requires a highly positive, active therapeutic relationship. As ample research suggests, a strong and positive therapeutic relationship in therapy […]

Forgiveness Meditation Practice – Mindful Happiness – Dr Anthony Quintiliani Sit comfortably in a meditation posture. “Ignorance” of Requirements Could End Your Clinical Career Recently various insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare fraud cases have been in the national headlines. Although these fraud cases grab headlines, the truth is that many clinically licensed helpers still do not understand clinical/legal documentation requirements.  In Buddhism, “ignorance” gets in our way; we never approach true liberation […]

Loving Kindness Meditation – More Thoughts Some less experienced meditators complain about how easily the mind’s wandering thoughts distract them from paying attention and deepening concentration.  This is a very common problem in meditation practice, and not always just for novices.  Here is a solution for you to try.  In Loving Kindness Meditation, you focus […]

-The Word, Sound, Meditation, and Music are all Timeless A Tribute to Elvis Presley and his Music The word has been associated with human consciousness.  The word requires the energy of sound to hear it.  Meditation places us in a most receptive state of mind and body; it allows us to be open to our […]

Laughter to Support you in Suffering As we all know life is filled with joy, suffering, and neutrality or boredom. This is THE WAY IT IS! Or, as a very good old friend often reminded me: “It is what it is!”  In Buddhism we preach a middle way in various areas of practice; the same […]

Preverbal Trauma – Therapy Problems A. R. Quintiliani, Ph.D., LADC Preverbal trauma (hereafter PVT) is one of the most pervasively troubling human conditions.
